Novel molecular assay provides rapid measure of S. aureus fluoroquinolone resistance

Published in TB and Outbreaks Week, September 16th, 2003

A novel polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay provides a rapid and accurate measure of staphylococcal fluoroquinolone resistance.

"Resistance to fluoroquinolones among clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus has become a clinical problem," scientists in Canada explained. "Therefore, a rapid method to identify S. aureus and its susceptibility to fluoroquinolones could provide clinicians with a useful tool for the appropriate use of these antimicrobial agents in the health care settings."

P. Lapierre and colleagues at the University of Laval "developed a rapid real-time PCR assay for the detection of S. aureus and mutations at...
