Oceana calls on cruise ship industry to address potential cause of Norwalk virus

Oceana, a non-profit international advocacy organization dedicated to restoring and protecting the world's oceans, called on the cruise ship industry to improve the treatment of the vast amounts of human waste generated and disposed of by cruise ships, which is a potential cause of the Norwalk virus.

According to The Association of State and Territorial Directors of Health Promotion and Public Health Education Web site, "(Norwalk) outbreaks in the United States are often linked to eating raw shellfish...contaminated via stool from sick food handlers or from raw sewage dumped overboard by recreational and/or commercial boaters."
