Desmoglein 1 cleavage by exfoliative toxin is conformation dependent

S. aureus exfoliative toxin can only cleave desmoglein 1 if it has a particular conformation, which is not maintained with loss of calcium.

"In bullous impetigo, Staphylococcus aureus spreads under the stratum corneum of skin by elaboration of exfoliative toxin, which hydrolyzes only one peptide bond in a highly structured calcium-binding domain of desmoglein 1, resulting in loss of its function," investigators in the United States report.
