Test helps protects the nation's blood supply

While September marks the official end of summer, it does not mean the end of mosquito season and the threat of West Nile virus (WNV).

More than 80% of the nation's blood supply will continue to be tested for WNV using Chiron and Gen-Probe's Procleix West Nile Virus Assay, the first and only test available to screen donated blood specifically for WNV.

Since July 1, when the Procleix WNV assay was made available under a FDA-approved Investigational New Drug (IND) protocol, the test has identified some 50 donations that were confirmed positive for WNV.

Avoiding the use of these donations has potentially saved as many as 150 people...
