Candida rugosa may be an emerging pathogen, especially in patients undergoing surgery or other invasive procedures.

C. rugosa "has been rarely reported as a human pathogen," scientists in Brazil noted.

A.L. Colombo and colleagues at the Federal University of Sao Paulo "retrospectively evaluated a cluster of Candida rugosa candidemia cases occurring in six hospitalized patients front a tertiary care teaching hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil."
