In a recent study from Russia, "betulin and betulinic acid" were "modified at the C-3 and C-28 positions".
The "antiviral activity of these derivatives has been evaluated in vitro," according to L.A. Baltina and colleagues working at the Russian Academy of Sciences in Ufa.
"It was found that simple modifications of the parent structure of lupane triterpenes produced highly effective agents against influenza A and herpes simplex type 1 viruses," the researchers concluded.
