CMV-seropositive donors might be preferable for seropositive SCT recipients

Cytomegalovirus (CMV)-seropositive stem-cell donors may increase the safety and efficacy of transplantation for CMV-seropositive recipients.

CMV infection "has been a major cause of morbidity and mortality after allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT)," hematologists in Sweden explained. "The importance of the recipient's serologic status is paramount. However, the importance of the donor's serologic status in CMV-seropositive recipients is controversial."

In their study, P. Ljungman and coauthors at Huddinge University Hospital "analyzed the influence of the donor's CMV status in a large cohort of patients."
