Ban won't be lifted on Thai poultry until bird flu eradicated

The European Union (E.U.) won't lift its ban on the import of chicken from Thailand until the World Health Organization (WHO) confirms that the bird flu there is stamped out, the E.U.'s top health official said February 10, 2004.

E.U. Health Commissioner David Byrne said "no lifting of a ban in Thailand will take place" until the WHO, a U.N. agency, gives its green light that the avian influenza outbreak is eradicated.

The E.U. is the second largest market for Thailand's chicken exports, after Japan, which has also imposed a ban. Thai poultry imports into the E.U. in 2002 were valued at EUR 55.4 million (US$68 million).
