Health officials hope West Nile virus cases drop this summer

Even though state health officials hope West Nile Virus won't hit Nebraska as hard as last year when 29 people died, they aren't taking any chances.

Chief Medical Officer Richard Raymond, MD, joined Governor Mike Johanns on April 21, 2004, to urge people to begin taking precautions now to eliminate standing water, where mosquitoes that carry the virus can breed, and to wear bug repellant at night.

Raymond said he is hopeful Nebraska follows trends in eastern states after a major outbreak and sees a drop in cases this summer.

"It will, I believe, continue to move to the west," he said.
