Woman becomes 47th person to die of aggressive bacteria

An Oklahoma City woman has become the 47th person in Oklahoma to die since 2000 from bacteria that can cause a number of serious infections, officials say.

Donya Hicks Dunn died earlier this month at Integris Baptist Medical Center after contracting Group A streptococcus, a hospital spokeswoman said.

"Frequently, even early medical attention can fail to save someone with this disease," Lauri Smithee, Health Department communicable disease director, said.

Besides the 47 people who have died, 214 people have had serious complications, health officials said.
