This gloomy outlook emerges from a report in the July 8, 2004, issue of Nature from Yi Guan and colleagues at the University of Hong Kong, who have been studying the origins of avian influenza virus H5N1, a highly pathogenic strain that caused disease outbreaks in poultry in China and seven other east Asian countries between late 2003 and early 2004; the same virus was fatal to humans in Thailand and Vietnam.
