Extracorporeal device efficiently removes endotoxin from whole blood

"The structural component of Gram bacteria," ET "induces the release of endogenous mediators of sepsis," scientists in California explained. "Attempts to remove these downstream molecules in vivo have not improved survival."
"However, extracorporeal strategies such as continuous renal replacement therapy or therapeutic plasmapheresis have shown benefit," noted M.C. Amoureux and colleagues at Carlsbad-based Clarigen Inc., who developed "an affinity-based extracorporeal technology for the removal of ET from whole blood."
