Three more cases of West Nile virus confirmed in North Dakota

Three North Dakotans were confirmed last week as having the West Nile virus, bringing the summer's total to 18, the state Health Department said.

The three individuals, who were not identified, were not ill enough to require hospital care, the agency said September 14, 2004.

The West Nile virus is carried by mosquitoes. It can cause head and body aches and fever, and in rare instances, can make someone seriously ill. One North Dakotan's death this year has been partly blamed on the virus, although the man, who lived in the northwest part of the state, had other medical problems.
