According to scientists writing in the journal Antiviral Research, "Genital herpes, caused by either herpes simplex virus type 1 or 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2), is a significant public health problem worldwide. It increases the risk of infection with HIV, upregulates HIV after infection and can be associated with serious morbidity and mortality.
