WHO says coming days critical for control of disease in tsunami-hit countries

The first few days are critical in controlling any potential outbreak of waterborne diseases in areas affected by the Indian Ocean tsunamis, the U.N. health agency said December 30, 2004.

The incidence of diarrhea is increasing, but is no more than expected at this stage of a natural disaster, said David Nabarro, MD, head of crisis operations for the World Health Organization (WHO).

"We remain really concerned about the situation," Nabarro told The Associated Press, adding that it is becoming clearer whether medical supplies are matching the needs of the affected areas.
