Antimicrobial use in equine hospitals leads to multidrug-resistant Salmonella.

"Nosocomial salmonellosis is of significant concern in veterinary medicine. Sporadic cases and outbreaks involving a variety of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Salmonella spp have been reported.

"A variety of mechanisms can be involved in the development of antimicrobial resistance," researchers in the United States report.

"Antimicrobial use in equine hospitals may provide selection pressure on the enteric and environmental microflora," said D.A. Dargatz and colleagues, "allowing for the emergence and persistence of MDR salmonellae."
