Italy's health officials call meeting to discuss bird flu

Italy's health minister led a meeting January 26, 2005, aimed at assessing the risk of bird flu for humans, and convened a gathering of experts on flu pandemics.

The Health Ministry said that the February 3 meeting was called to "make an analysis of the risk on the base of current new information and pinpoint possible scenarios."

"There is a real danger for public health which doesn't allow for delays" in strategy, the ministry said in a statement.

Vietnam has warned that bird flu is spreading even faster this year than in last year's disastrous Asian outbreak.
