China orders emergency measures to control meningitis outbreak

China's Health Ministry has issued emergency orders to stop an outbreak of meningitis that has killed 16 people since December 20 and sickened 258, government radio said February 1, 2005.

All regions of China except southern Fujian province, the tropical island of Hainan, and Tibet have reported infections, with the first cases showing up in a group of eastern provinces, China National Radio said on its Web site.

It didn't say where the fatalities occurred, but earlier reports said eight people, most of them schoolchildren, died after the disease spread through schools in the eastern province of Anhui.
