U.S. military gets authority to give troops anthrax vaccines

Federal health officials have granted emergency authority for the U.S. military to administer anthrax vaccine again to troops, and the Pentagon said February 1, 2005, it would ask a federal judge to allow vaccinations to resume.

According to a court filing February 1, 2005, the authority granted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) would allow the military to vaccinate U.S. forces for 6 months but not to punish people who refused. Defense officials say military forces are at heightened risk of anthrax attack.
