Study: No role for unsafe injections in causing HIV in Zimbabwe

There is a lot of controversy over whether the spread of HIV in sub-Saharan Africa is predominantly caused by unsafe sexual practices, or whether unsafe medical injections given by health professionals might also have a prominent part to play.

In a paper published in the freely available online medical journal PLoS Medicine, Ben Lopman and colleagues from Imperial College London looked at the evidence for unsafe injections being a major cause of HIV infections in rural Zimbabwe. In an ongoing survey between 1999/2000 and 2002/3 the authors questioned 505 men and 1342 women about their sexual history, whether they had children, and whether they received...
