Peripheral Arterial Occlusive Disease

Anti-C. pneumoniae treatment inhibits PAOD progression

Antibiotic treatment targeting Chlamydia pneumoniae can slow the progression of peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD).

Though roxithromycin therapy has been "found to inhibit progression of PAOD, the nature of this effect (antibiotic or anti-inflammatory) has remained elusive," according to scientists in Switzerland.

In a study conducted by P.A. Krayenbuehl and colleagues at the University of Zurich Hospital, the "course of PAOD was prospectively assessed in elderly men during 4 years, comparing 51 C. pneumoniae seropositive (IgG {{>=}}1:128) with 46 seronegative patients (IgG <1:64 and IgA <1:32)."
