The pattern and type of noninjection drug use is associated with HIV progression to AIDS.

In a recent study, researchers in the United States conducted a study "to evaluate the effects of longitudinal patterns and types of non-injection drug use (NIDU) on HIV progression in the highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) era."

Researchers related, "Data was collected semiannually from 1994 to 2002, from 6 U.S. sites, on 1046 HIV+ women as part of a prospective cohort study of the Women's Interagency HIV Study (WIHS).
