Molecular diagnostics optimizes autopsy diagnosis when infection is suspect.

"Deaths due to infectious diseases are common worldwide. The autopsy, although less frequently performed than previously, is important to our understanding of disease pathogenesis," scientists writing in the journal Archives of Medical Research report.

According to E.L. Mazuchowski and colleagues at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, "The autopsy also provides critical information regarding potential disease outbreaks."
