Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Completes its 2006-07 Sampling Season for Avian Influenza in Waterfowl: No Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Was Detected

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) has concluded its 2006-07 sampling season for the Asian strain of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza. Between July 2006 and March 2007, VDGIF tested 913 birds for this virus, which has caused illness and death in birds and humans in other parts of the world. No highly pathogenic avian influenza strains were detected.

This surveillance effort was part of a national coordinated program in which more than 116,000 birds were tested in every U.S. state and Canadian province. To date, the highly pathogenic strain of Asian H5N1 avian influenza has not been found in North America.
