According to recent research published in the Journal of Bacteriology, "The DevR-DevS two-component system of Mycobacterium tuberculosis mediates bacterial adaptation to hypoxia, a condition believed to be associated with the initiation and maintenance of dormant bacilli during latent tuberculosis.
