Research from Kitasato University has provided new data on HIV/AIDS co-infection

"Macrophages (M Phi s) are a major source of HIV-1 especially in patients with tuberculosis. There are M Phi s that are permissive and those that restrict HIV-1," scientists writing in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America report. "Regulation of hematopoietic cell kinase (Hck) activity and selective expression of CCAAT enhancer binding protein beta (C/EBP beta) isoforms greatly contribute to determine distinct susceptibility of M Phi s to HIV-1.
