Investigators at Johns Hopkins University, Medical Department target meningitis

"Described here is the clinical presentation and etiology of cominunity-acquired meningitis in adult patients in a Baltimore community hospital from 1997 to 2006. A retrospective chart review was performed," researchers in the United States report. "Data were collected regarding demographics, presenting symptoms, cerebrospinal fluid findings, and outcome. Of 80 patients identified, 17 were diagnosed with bacteria] meningitis, 18 with viral meningitis, 39 with aseptic meningitis of unclear etiology, and 6 with other noninfectious causes.
