Researchers from University of Sao Paulo provide details of new studies and findings in the area of leishmaniasis

"Mast cells (MCs) are associated with chronic inflammatory diseases. However, there is no study evaluating the importance of MCs in the mucosal leishmaniasis (ML)," scientists writing in the journal Parasite Immunology report. "The aim of this study was to quantify the most important cytokines associated with mucosal leishmaniasis, before and after disease treatment, correlating with the healing. A cohort of 12 patients with ML was evaluated, and biopsies were taken before and after the treatment.
