"A depressed level of natural killer (NK) activity is one of the various immunological abnormalities in HIV infection. Defective NK cell functions can be partially restored in vitro by interleukin (IL)-2 and IL-12," researchers in Madras, India report. "IL-15 shares receptor and several biological properties with IL-2. The effect of IL-15 on NK cells in patients with HIV and tuberculosis coinfection (HIV-TB) is unclear. This study examined the cytotoxic activity and cytokine response of NK cells in HIV- TB after stimulation with IL-15 and IL-12/IL-2.
