Patients' Bath Basins Increase Risk for Hospital-Acquired Infections

Patients across the country may be opening themselves up to infection as a result of bathing practices applied in hospitals. According to a study published in the January 2009 American Journal of Critical Care, bath basins are a significant source for the transmission of hospital-acquired infections (HAI), especially to patients that are immune-compromised and those at high-risk. It is estimated that 1.75 million to 3.5 million patients admitted to U.S. hospitals, or 5 to 10 percent of all patients, contract nosocomial or HAIs leading to approximately 100,000 deaths annually.
