"Mycobacterium bovis causes tuberculosis in animals and humans. Infected cows can transmit the bacillus to humans via milk," scientists writing in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology report. "Milk also contains lactic acid bacteria (LAB). LAB isolated from milk were put in milk cultures together with spiked M. bovis," wrote S.H. Mariam and colleagues. The researchers concluded: "Different LAB had different abilities to reduce M. bovis counts, as M. bovis was undetectable in some while it persisted in two of the cultures."
