"Mycobacterium tuberculosis genotypes resistant to reactive nitrogen intermediates (RNI) predominate in certain urban communities, suggesting that this phenotype influences disease transmission. To compare different M. tuberculosis genotypes for resistance to RNI generated in vitro," scientists writing in the International Journal of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease report. "We genotyped 420 M. tuberculosis isolates from a neighborhood in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and analyzed them for susceptibility to RNI generated in acidified sodium nitrite (ASN) solution.
