"An inspector recently noticed an errant arc strike from an E2209-16 electrode inside a 2205 duplex stainless steel tank we are fabricating. The inspector insisted that we not only grind off the bump but also insisted that we excavate (by grinding) below the surface at least 1/16 in," scientists in the United States report.

"This made the base metal thickness less than the specified minimum, so we had to deposit a repair weld to rebuild the excavation from the arc strike. I can understand such a requirement when the steel is hardenable, but I cannot understand such a requirement for a stainless steel that is not hardenable.
