Toe Transplantation for Finger Amputation in Selected Patients

Toe transplantation for index finger amputations improved hand function when performed in selected patients, researchers report.

Functional deficit after single distal index finger amputations has been considered insignificant, and reconstruction usually is not recommended.

F. Demirkan and colleagues reported on 19 cases of second toe transplantation for reconstruction of isolated index finger amputation distal to the proximal interphalangeal joint ("Toe Transplantation for Isolated Index Finger Amputations Distal to the Proximal Interphalangeal Joint," Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, February 1999;103(2):499-507).
