Researchers Genetically Engineer Microorganisms To Self-Destruct

In view of public and scientific concern about the release of recombinant microorganisms being released into open environments, an international group of researchers is designing active biological containment systems.

Data are inadequate on how recombinant microbes survive and multiply in the environment. Little data exist about how stable rDNA is and how well it is transferred in natural environments, the researchers noted.
