Influenza epidemics can cause significant mortality in the elderly. One such epidemic, occurring in 1989 and 1990 killed an estimated 26,000 people over a 12-week period, most of whom were elderly with chronic medical conditions.
"Admissions to hospital and deaths associated with pneumonia and influenza can be significantly reduced by the influenza vaccination," R. Morgan and colleagues wrote ("Influenza Vaccination: Do the Aged Reap the Benefit'" Postgraduate Medical Journal, January 1995;71(832):22-23).
