The World as a Hot Zone: New and Re-Emerging Diseases

Although the term "hot zone" might depict an area in the tropics, this military slang identifies any area occupied by deadly infectious organisms, and the diseases they cause exist globally.

Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), says, "Despite our best efforts, changes in microbes and our environment will continue to present new health challenges worldwide. Hantavirus, drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) and cholera are only a few of the new and re-emerging diseases we see today. NIAID-supported scientists are leaders in efforts to detect, combat and prevent such diseases."
