According to an abstract presented by the authors to the 2nd National Conference on Human Retroviruses and Related Infections, held January 29 - February 2, 1995, in Washington, DC, "Attenuated vaccines and/or gene therapy appear to be the most promising modalities for combating HIV infection. These interventions, however, are currently felt to be too hazardous to warrant trials. We have developed an approach that could be combined with a vaccine or gene therapy regimen to reduce the risks.
