The result suggests that an AIDS vaccine for people might be able to protect against a wide variety of HIV, researchers wrote.
Rhesus macaques were immunized against HIV-1, the dominant type in the United States, and exposed to HIV-2, which is prevalent in West Africa.
Three of eight vaccinated macaques resisted HIV-2 infection during the six-month observation period, while all three unvaccinated animals became infected, researchers reported in the April 1995 issue of the journal Nature Medicine.
