Antibodies Against Viral Nonstructural Proteins Found

The discovery of antibodies to nonstructural proteins of poliovirus and other viruses may have applications for future vaccine development.

In earlier studies research Ellie Ehrenfeld and colleagues reported that both naturally infected humans and experimentally infected chimpanzees developed significant antibody titers against hepatitis A virus (HAV) nonstructural proteins. Antigen recognition by these antibodies was abolished by boiling the antigens in SDS, suggesting that the antibodies reacted with conformation-specific epitopes that required protein folding.
