In earlier studies research Ellie Ehrenfeld and colleagues reported that both naturally infected humans and experimentally infected chimpanzees developed significant antibody titers against hepatitis A virus (HAV) nonstructural proteins. Antigen recognition by these antibodies was abolished by boiling the antigens in SDS, suggesting that the antibodies reacted with conformation-specific epitopes that required protein folding.
