According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 209th American Chemical Society National Meeting, held April 2-6, 1995, in Anaheim, California, "Scale-up issues for the silica chromatography of yeast-derived Hepatitis B vaccine differ from those encountered with traditional protein separations due to a unique interaction between the antigen and the silica surface. The antigen, a large and complex lipo-protein particle, interacts with detergents such as Triton and requires heat for selective elution from silica.
