Large Trial of Vaccine Efficacy in HIV+ Needed

A large clinical trial is needed to determine once and for all whether pneumococcal vaccine is effective in HIV-infected patients, according to a report from the United Kingdom.

The debate over vaccinating HIV-infected persons against pneumococcal infection continues to rage, with no consensus existing in the United Kingdom or the United States regarding the efficacy of the measure.

Prompted by several trials demonstrating vaccine protective efficacy in large numbers of patients, the American Immunization Practices Advisory Committee has recommended that HIV-positive children of two-years and over and adults with symptomatic or asymptomatic HIV...
