U.S. Vaccine Program Costs Quadruple Estimates

The U.S. Federal Vaccines for Children (VFC) program is roughly four-times more expensive than projected when it went into effect in 1994, and could easily fall victim to Congressional budget slashing, according to a report in the medical journal the Lancet.

A General Accounting Office (GAO) report issued in June of 1995 was critical of the Medicaid run VFC. The report agreed with Representative Dale Bumpers (D, Arkansas) who argues that more emphasis is needed to identify high-risk children. Bumpers has been a vocal opponent of the VFC, although he favors federally funded immunization.
