The new tool provides a rapid means of growing cultures of gene-transfected primary human peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs). It permits the in vitro evaluation of gene therapies in cells directly relevant to those infected with HIV. Current assays use transformed T-cell lines developed for laboratory use.
Moreover, modification of the new system provides a way to grow pure cultures of genetically engineered cells for therapeutic use.
