Caused by the tick-borne spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi, early manifestations of Lyme disease can include meningitis and carditis and late manifestations can include arthritis and neurologic symptoms. While antibiotic treatment usually cures the disease, one out of 10 patients develop arthritis that can persist for years after antibiotic therapy.
