When genes for cytokines, like IL-12 and IL-2, are transduced in tumor cells they stimulate an efficient antitumor reaction which involves both nonspecific and specific immune mechanisms that impairs the oncogenicity of the engineered cells. When used as a vaccine, these cells are capable of eliciting an immune memory which inhibits subsequent tumor challenge.
