Cambodia Launches Campaign To Eradicate Polio

Cambodia's countryside remains littered with millions of land mines - a reminder of decades of war and internal strife - but it is polio that maims and disables the most.

While 30,000 of the country's 130,000 disabled people are victims of land mine accidents, up to 60,000 have been struck by polio. A comprehensive program launched in 1995 aims to eradicate the scourge. In February 1996 more than 40,000 volunteers fanned out across the country in the second inoculation campaign.
