Vaccine Given Over 4 Months Offers Same Protection as 6 Month Schedule

Researchers at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) studying the effectiveness of the hepatitis B vaccine in teenagers have found that a series of immunizations given over a four-month period offers the same protection as a six-month dosing schedule.

The finding is important because the shorter period is easier for schools to administer in mass immunization programs, which will encourage more institutions to participate, according to Leslie Walker, M.D., a fellow in the UCSF Division of Adolescent Medicine and a member of the research team.
