NIH Director Wants To Disband DNA Advisory Committee

On the advice of two expert advisory groups commissioned in 1995, Dr. Harold Varmus, U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) director, said that it is time to dissolve the NIH's Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee and to leave the detailed analysis of gene therapy trials to agencies such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Varmus voiced his opinion at a meeting of gene therapy researchers that was held in Hilton Head, South Carolina. He said that the Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee "... did serve some function ..." in its early days, but that the committee has outlived its usefulness. The committee consists of lawyers, ethicists, public representatives...
