Infants/AIDS Patients at Greatest Risk of BCG Disease

Immunocompromised infants and late-stage AIDS patients are at greatest risk for disseminated bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) disease caused by antituberculosis vaccination, according to a report from Durham, North Carolina's Duke University.

The report was delivered at the 96th General Meeting of the American Society for Microbiology, held May 19-23, 1996 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The attenuated Mycobacterium bovis vaccine strain BCG is given worldwide to prevent tuberculosis, and complications from the vaccine are rare.
